57 Jessamine Ave., Georgetown, SC 29442
Paul J. Hletko, MD, FAAP
Dr. Hletko is the founder and president of the Georgetown Pediatric Center. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. He completed his training at the Cook County Children’s Hospital in 1975 where he served as Chief Pediatric Resident.
Dr. Hletko practiced in Kalamazoo Michigan
from 1975 to 1989. His special interests included Pediatric Hematology,
helping underachieving students, and child transportation safety. As an
Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Michigan State
University, he authored
multiple papers and was the principal investigator for multiple grants awarded
through the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. He has received
awards for this work from the American
Academy of Pediatrics, Michigan
Office of Highway Safety Planning, the Kalamazoo Pediatric Residency Program,
and the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine.
Dr. Hletko was originally board certified in 1976. He was recertified in Pediatrics in 1984, 1996, and 2009. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the American Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine.
In 1989, after 14 years of shoveling snow and working in a large group practice with multiple practice sites and long commutes, he finally acted on his dreams to “do it by himself in the sunny, warm seaside small town South.” Thus, he became the only practicing pediatrician in Georgetown County and started the Georgetown Pediatric Center.
Dr. Hletko has always believed in the importance of children’s timely access to university level care at a major children’s medical center, even in distant rural communities. In 1999, in recognition of his close decade-long work with The Medical University of South Carolina’s Children’s Hospital, he was named an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at MUSC. Weekly outreach specialty clinics staffed by MUSC pediatric academicians began that year and have evolved now into Georgetown’s first permanent residency program. (see MUSC Georgetown Presence page)
Dr. Hletko has been listed in every edition of the Best Doctors in America. He has served on numerous hospital and community committees and is a former Chief of Staff at the Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He and his wife Jana have three children and eight grandchildren. He is an avid runner, enjoys studying European and American history, and enjoys good fiction. He loves his new puppy Winnie and decorates the office with her latest pictures.
